Canada Announces 25% Retaliatory Tariff on U.S. Origin Goods
In response to the United States' recent imposition of a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, the Canadian government has announced immediate retaliatory measures. A 25% surtax will be applied to $30 billion worth of U.S. origin goods imported into Canada starting February 4, 2025.

The surtax affects a wide range of consumer and household products, including:
Food products e.g. orange juice, peanut butter, coffee, and spirits
Cosmetics and perfume
Pulp and paper products
Textiles and apparel
Handbags and footwear
Appliances and furniture
Motorcycles

Further measures will follow within 21 days, covering an additional $125 billion worth of U.S. imports, subject to a public consultation period. These goods will include passenger vehicles, electric vehicles, steel and aluminum products, aerospace products, and various food categories such as beef, pork, and dairy.
Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized the importance of supporting Canadian-made goods and indicated that Parliament will remain prorogued as the government continues to assess further measures.
