Notice for Overtime Strike at the Port of Montreal

The union representing the Port of Montreal’s longshore workers, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 375, has announced an indefinite overtime strike starting at 7 a.m. on October 10, 2024. The action comes as negotiations between the union and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) have reached a standstill, particularly regarding work scheduling issues.

Union representative Michel Murray emphasized the union's willingness to engage in "intensive negotiations" but claimed that the employer is dragging its feet. In response, the union is ramping up pressure through the refusal to work overtime, seeking better work-life balance and modernization of scheduling practices.

The MEA expressed concern, stating that the complete cessation of overtime will significantly impact port operations, with incomplete crews potentially causing slowdowns or halts. The association also noted that employees assigned to incomplete shifts will not be paid. The MEA has urged the union to withdraw the strike notice and follow procedures to resolve the dispute through the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.

Both sides remain in disagreement, with CUPE 375 arguing for modernization and fairer work schedules, while the MEA focuses on operational continuity and the potential public consequences of the strike.
