The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is fully prepared to implement any surtax orders issued by the Government of Canada in response to U.S. tariffs. The government is actively working to mitigate the impact of these tariffs and engaging with U.S. officials to prevent their imposition.
Finance Canada has indicated that remissions may be considered after a surtax is imposed. If the U.S. enacts tariffs, Canada may implement retaliatory surtaxes immediately, with potential consultations on additional goods later. CBSA is prepared to execute these measures efficiently.
If the U.S. tariffs take effect on February 1, 2025, and Canada imposes a surtax the same day, the CBSA will host a technical briefing on February 4 at 9:30 a.m. via MS Teams.
We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as new information becomes available, including details on how to register for CBSA's technical briefing.
